The symbolism and inspiration:
Melangell's story is reminiscent of a fairy tale, so I used classic fairy tale illustrations for inspiration. She stands sheltered in a Rowan tree (sacred in ancient Wales) while a rabbit gazes out fearlessly from among the folds of her robe. The border is formed of leeks and daffodils (both symbols of Wales). The kneeling prince has a red lion on his cap. Small creatures are visible in the foreground. The horse and hound look on calmly. Three hares are depicted inside a shamrock in deference to her Irish heritage.
