Colmcille rests in front of his monastery at Iona (not as it looked in his day, but a few centuries later). In the distant background is the sea and a coracle sails off (borrowed from St. Brendan's anachron.) A book is open at his feet and a faithful shepherd dog keeps watch. The border is formed by images inspired by the Book of Kells and a dove soars over all. The tartan pattern is an interpretation, created by combining adaptations of the Malcolm clan and St. Colmcille.
